Wigs and gowns

I'm not likely to be buying these items any time soon, but have just been having a look at the various retailer's websites. I have expected the website to have a 'because you're worth it' badge. £145 for a gown doesn't seem so awful.

£525.00 for a wig (or
£1,865.00 for a different style with frizzed rather than looped hair on top), however- now that's pretty big money. That's more than the average UK take-home salary.

When you think that it will last you the rest of your career, I suppose it's not so much (or until they get rid of wigs - but I have a strong faith in the length of time it takes any change to filter through in our blessed legal system).

It's still making me want to sneak into the local farm with a pair of shears and give a horse a haircut, mind. It'd be just like knitting! Maybe the Guardian Craft section will even have a posting on how to make your very own wig soon - it's very frucool, you know!

Although based on the above effort, I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Your research has revealed some pretty reasonable pricing Mel (though I suppose it will always be a case of pretty damned serious GBH of the Wallet in order to shell out for a wig) - but did you also consider the purchase of various other accoutrement such as a wig tin, band box and gown bag?!?! (If I ever have to buy a wig, I have a very nice home for it in a tin of Marks and Spencer Biscuits, where it is nice and dark and warm and, well, a bit chocolatey)

Minxy, I am chieftain supreme of the shallow and superficial approach to research! I've no idea what else is required - I was just looking at the 'big ticket' items. Although based on your friend's spending, it must be everything else that adds up!

I think it would be very good for the soul if your wig always smelt a bit biscuity - who wouldn't love a barrister that smells like shortbread?

I shall stick stickers and personalise my wig tin. With glitter and diamonte and the like- it'll look proper classy, like!!

OOO - I LIKE the idea of glitter and spanglie bits! One further tip, though; you simply HAVE consider a name for your potential wig and you must, at the very LEAST put it down for wig socialisation classes?!?( they are very difficult to get into and you MUST be sure that you are living in the correct catchment area!!)

HAH. That sort of a Wig would probably need a name like Miffy or Muffy, and would go to Cheltenham Wiggettes College.

I didn't even give my teddies and dolls names as a kid, might have probs stretching to anthropomorphising a wig! (Really- they were called 'Doll' and 'Bear'. Serious kid).

(Which reminds me, very randomly- I've just read the Life of Pi which is a marvellous read if you haven't already read it, LM.)

You didnt name your Teddies?! LoL, How Pragmatic!! Having said that, I have decided upon a name for potential wig - Frank. What do you think?!

I have read the 'Life of Pi', btw - corking yarn innit?!?

I've just had a thought: when you personalise your wig tin, Mel, I have no DOUBT that it will not REALLY be with glitter and the like but with stickers for Human Rights Watch, Amnesty, Liberty, NO2ID, CND and Green Peace!!!!!!

Corking yarn indeed!

Frank seems a good wig name. I think what makes for a good cat name will also make for a good wig name...somehow they remind me of cats that like to sit on your head.

If only I had a Blue Peter Badge to stick alongside all those other badges/stickers on my tin! Maybe some 'ironic' stickers from Camden, you know, like the ones that say 'I like the Pope, the Pope smokes dope'?*

*Not that I'm condoning the smoking of dope or the liking of the Pope.

Ooo!! I know the stickers you mean - I had one on my ( VERY) old ( and now very EX) Renault 5 stating " My Karma has just run over my Dogma", though one which stated " Keep Wales Tidy - Throw Your Litter in England" unfortunately resulted in a smashed drivers side window.......!

What, there's two types of wigs?? Does this mean that if you've got a more expensive one, you can laugh at the owners of the cheap version in court?! :D That would be hilarious...

I know, who knew?

Like there isn't enough snobbery about!

That sounds like so much for the wig but if it is to last your career then I guess it's not that bad.

That's a pretty expensive wig. I usually see wigs at a price range of around 100 - 800 US Dollars. I remember when my sister bought one of those Estetica wigs. She tagged along with my other sister who bought one of those Forever Young wigs. One wig wouldn't cost that much. Well, if you'll consider any styling after your purchase, then that's something different.

Wigs are suprisingly expensive, even those for parties, or fancy dress. Although a quick search on ebay - you can usually find a few deals, nothing like the ones you posted above though :)
